Our History
The concept of Napa Little League began in the fall of 1982, led by the late Napa Sheriff John Baumgartner. Having played Little League as a young boy, Baumgartner believed such a program in Napa would be a positive influence on local youth. He and a team of volunteers began the application process for a national charter and negotiated with the City of Napa for a potential site.
Thanks to the efforts of parents, community leaders, and local service organizations, eight Little League teams began playing baseball in the spring of 1983 at what was then known as Ridgeview Middle School. The following year, in the spring of 1984, the Royce Hall Little League Complex at Garfield Park was officially dedicated—home to three fields built for Napa Little League athletes. In that first season at Garfield Park, the two completed fields allowed 16 teams to play baseball. With the completion of a third field shortly after, the League was able to grow to 24 teams across all levels.
Made up entirely of volunteers, we’ve since partnered with the Napa Valley Unified School District to provide even more playing fields—expanding opportunities for kids across Napa Valley to play ball. Today, Napa Little League provides opportunities for over 700 athletes to play baseball across seven different divisions. Additionally, the Challengers League allows athletes with special needs to enjoy the game, assisted by players from our Majors division every Sunday during the spring season.
While traditional "baseball season" in the springtime is our most popular program, running from mid-February through early June, Napa Little League also offers a fall season with an even greater emphasis on learning and loving the game. Fall Ball registration typically opens in July, with games beginning in mid-August. Still, it is our spring program that has earned Napa Little League its reputation as a premier organization within the Little League community.
